The eco-friendly paint is available pre-mixed in reused 2.5Litre and 5Litre containers, clearly labelled with key information including the paint colour, which is painted onto the label. It represents great value for money as visitors to the Market can avail of a special promotional offer by becoming members of the Rediscover Paint Re-use Scheme for just one day, which will entitle them to get up to 10 litres of pre-mixed emulsion paint for just €5. Any market goers requiring more than 10 litres of paint can join the Rediscover Paint Reuse Scheme as a standard member. This entitles them to order bespoke colours, which can be collected at future markets.
The initiative began in October 2014 when Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council engaged Rediscover Paint to take waste emulsion paint from our Ballyogan Recycling Park and make it available for re-use to individuals and community groups to enable them to brighten up their homes, businesses and community projects at a very low cost. To assist with marketing the re-used paint this Summer, the Environmental Protection Agency funded the provision of the Marlay Park Market stall for sixteen weeks.
Commenting on this innovative paint re-use project, Margaret Coles, Green Business Officer with Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, said “So far almost seven tonnes of emulsion paint have been taken from Ballyogan Recycling Park for re-use. We want more people to know about the scheme and to buy the paint. We believe the stall at Marlay Park CoCo Market is a great way of spreading the word and we are delighted with the great interest and support shown by market goers.”
Rediscover Paint was established in 2007 to divert paint from disposal or incineration and, instead, distribute the paint for re-use by the general public and community organisations. In addition, the scheme provides valuable workplace training though a community employment initiative.
Rediscover Paint has recently been promoted as part of the Get Involved initiative, which works with local communities to improve their own lives, create local jobs, and protect the environment.
