An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, Councillor Tom Murphy, presented Mr. Brendan Donohoe with the ‘Ireland Medal and Parchment’ of the Lifesaving Foundation (www.lifesavingfoundation.ie) at a recent event in the Council Chamber.  In his address An Cathaoirleach drew attention to the importance of the ordinary citizen; often the first responders, in drowning prevention.

The Ireland Medal award was presented to Brendan in recognition of over 50 years of his voluntary work in lifesaving. His work in the local community is centred in Monkstown Lifesaving Club located at dlr Leisure Services Monkstown where children, teenagers and adults can learn water safety and rescue skills. His various roles as lifeguard, teacher, trainer and as a lifesaving administrator has also extended to an international level where the Life Saving Foundation also works in aiding communities in developing countries.

During his speech An Cathaoirleach also complimented the emergency services for their hard work and diligence in dealing with drowning incidents and was delighted to welcome representatives of these emergency services to the occasion.

An Cathaoirelach was presented with a copy of ‘To the Rescue’ a book, which recorded 125 years of lifesaving in Ireland to mark the occasion.
