Intro Text

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council regularly monitor the water quality along the coast. Following receipt of the results from the samples taken on Tuesday the 10th January 2017, we have taken the precautionary steps of placing a Temporary Prohibition Notice, advising against swimming at Seapoint and Blackrock. The results showed a high level of Enterococci and E. Coli.

  • Enterococci are widely distributed in the environment and are normal commensals of the intestinal tracts of animals, birds and humans. Its presence is indicative of faecal contamination.
  • E. Coli (Escherichia coli) is a faecal coliform and indicator organism because it occurs in the intestinal flora of both animals and humans. Contamination allows the organism to spread to water environments where its presence indicates faecal contamination.

The cause of these high levels is not known and an investigation has commenced. The water at this location will be resampled and the results are expected back on Monday 16 January 2017. If the re-sample results are acceptable the temporary prohibition notice will be removed.
