According to the 2016 census, there are 4968 (excluding holiday homes) vacant units in dlr, representing a 5.7% base vacancy level , which is the second lowest nationally.
We recognise that that are many reasons why properties were recorded vacant on the census night including hospital/nursing home stay, probate and legal issues which cannot be made available for other households. However, there are many other properties that stand empty in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown that would make lovely homes for people with a bit of work, but often people are put off by, or do not have the upfront funds needed, to undertake such work.
The Government has made €140m available nationally under the new repair and leasing initiative to encourage home owners to rent such houses on a long term basis if money is made available to refit the properties. The initiative is currently being piloted in Carlow and Waterford and is expected to be rolled out in Dublin in the coming months. In addition, a buy and repair renewal initiative will allow dlr to buy and repair suitable housing.
