Location
dlr County
Intro Text

Across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown 27 local community groups, residents associations and other groups have been awarded grants totalling €10,000 through the Big Hello; National Community Weekend grant fund to put on events in their local communities over the May bank-holiday weekend!

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown Local Community Development Committee is administering funding on behalf of the Department of Rural and Community Development to support these events in the community, with the emphasis being on a large number of small community events.

In addition there are also almost 60 events associated with Street Feast taking place in the County on Sunday the 5th of May, and numbers continue to grow. Street Feast is being run as part of the National Community Weekend.  All of the Street Feast events are scheduled for Sunday the 5th of May and you can find all their locations on the Street Feast website.

The events are a celebration of the great spirit of community that exists across the country and an effort to help people who share communities to come together, get to know each other and deepen the sense of community in their area.

Speaking about the upcoming weekend, An Cathaoirleach Cllr Ossian Smyth said:

"I'm very excited about The Big Hello Weekend and the Street Feast events all around our County. I believe that gatherings like this play a really important role in helping to knit together local communities enabling local people who are at different stages of their lives, who might not ordinarily cross paths, to meet together and to get to know one another. Getting to know your neighbours greatly improves your sense of community and greatly reduces feelings of social isolation both young and old. Humans are social animals and simple things such as being able to give a wave and say hello mean a great deal to us."

Please see below the events / groups that were awarded funding under the scheme.

These events are all run by the community and aimed at bringing communities closer together; fostering new relationships within the community and to further strengthen community spirit in our County.  The range of events covers open days in community centres, estate parties organised by residents, barbeques hosted by Men’s Sheds, a family fun cycle, an intergenerational choir event and many more.
