New Autism Spectrum Collection Launched in Stillorgan Library on Tuesday 22nd October 2019 at 10.30am, with An Leas Cathaoirleach Deirdre Donnelly

ASC is a dedicated collection of resources collated with the needs of the autism community in mind. This new booklet produced by dlr Libraries includes a reading guide as well as a lending collection and is designed to offer support to the autism community and those with additional needs in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County.

This booklet came about as a result of an ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) working group of interested library staff set up to examine how dlr libraries could improve services for users and their families living with autism.
The working group first met in December 2018 and have introduced a range of measures since then. These include;  quiet evenings in Cabinteely and Dundrum libraries, a sensory/quiet room in Deansgrange library, sensory boxes available in each library and social stories for each library on the libraries website, as well as a range of autism friendly events in dlr Libraries. The group has also sought advice from and had training with AsIAm.  AsIAm is Ireland's national Autism charity and advocacy organisation.

The working group engaged with author Deirdre Sullivan to compile the reading guide part of this booklet. All books in this reading guide are available in our eight library branches. While by no means exhaustive this list introduces users to books about, written by or for those on the autism spectrum.  This is a broad guide and we do hope users of all ages will find something of interest in this selection of titles.

The ASC lending collection includes sensory /tactile toys and equipment; tools to help build motor skills and items that may help develop life skills. Housed in dlr LexIcon, these items can be borrowed from any library in the county. Inspired by the TTT (Toys, Technology and Training) collection in Kildare libraries, the working group sought advice from colleagues in Kildare libraries to start the first taster lending collection in dlr libraries. It is hoped that this collection will expand over the coming years in response to community needs.

Thanks are extended to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht who has made this ASC project possible through Creative Ireland funding.
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council supports all measures that improve our services and that work towards enhancing the lives of people residing in the county. This is a free service.
