Intro Text

dlr Libraries hosted a Lego build competition in summer 2017 for the first time ever. The theme was ‘Design your ideal library using Lego’ We weren’t sure how many builds we would receive and we were thrilled and a little overwhelmed on Wed 20th Sept to see 81 library builds arrive, all fabulously imagined and built from Lego!

Staff and public alike have been delighted with the creativity, fun, ingenuity and hard work that went into each and every build. We also love the descriptions of the libraries that accompanied the entries, and like to think this project encouraged literacy as well as STEM skills. We also know exactly who to ask if and when we ever need another library designed for the county!

Cathaoirleach Cllr Tom Murphy presented prizes to the four prize-winners on Sat 23rd September at a prize-giving event in dlr LexIcon. We would like to congratulate our winners, and our highly commended in each category, but also every single child that entered the competition, and parents who helped get the build safely to and from the LexIcon- which was no mean feat!

In the 6yrs and Under category:

Winner was Oscar Chubb, 5yrs old and Oscars Lego build won for its jungle roof garden.

We would also like to highly commend Luca Scuilli and Louis Conmy in the under 6 category.

In the 7-9yrs category winner is Aisling Kavanagh.  Aisling had lots of reading rooms in her library design.

Highly commended in this category are Elliott Hobbs and Elsa Walsh

In the 10-12yrs category, our prize-winners were team builders Shane O’ Sullivan and Aidan O’Sullivan. This build was chosen as it is eco-friendly with solar panels and also has interesting events on!

Highly commended in this category were the team builds by Naomi and Janah Lacy and Joseph and Thomas Mc Donough.

In the crowd favourite category our Winner was Andrew Murphy. Staff in dlr LexIcon chose this winner and were particularly impressed with the book sorter and lift in the library build.

Highly commended were Art O’ Brien and Luke Lawlor.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors:

-Brambles Café, dlr LexIcon sponsored goodie bags for all children present at the Summer Reading & Lego Build prize giving event.

-Hamley’s Dundrum store sponsored a wonderful box of Lego as well as a Hamley’s teddy bear, all of which has gone to great homes

-Learn IT sponsored a great box of educational Lego that was awarded to our winner in the 6 years and under category. Learn IT also had the difficult job of selecting winners in the under 6, 7-9 and 10-12yrs categories. Learn It also chose highly commended in these categories. Thank you for the prize and the judging!

We supplemented our sponsorship prizes with vouchers from the Art & Hobby Shop.
