Preparation of a Local Area Plan for Rathmichael

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is preparing a new Local Area Plan for the Rathmichael area.

A Local Area Plan is a statutory planning document prepared by the Local Authority in accordance with the requirements of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended). A Local Area Plan consists of a suite of policies and objectives for an area, intended to guide the area’s development for a period of 6 years, which may be extended to a maximum of 10 years if appropriate.

Stages of the Making of a Local Area Plan

The plan-making process can involve up to three stages:

  • Pre-Draft Stage (we are at this stage),
  • Draft Plan Stage; and, potentially,
  • Proposed Material Amendment’s Stage.

The process and timeline for preparing a Local Area Plan is governed by the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended). The stages and timeframes for the statutory plan-making process are illustrated in the graphic below:

Next Steps - Pre-Draft Consultation

Public consultation is an important aspect of the plan-making process in order to address issues and concerns which relate to the Plan area and to ensure that the Plan reflects public and community aspirations in addition to government policies, strategies and guidelines. Each stage of the plan-making process will provide for public engagement and it is important to the Local Authority that we hear your views.

It is anticipated that the pre-draft public consultation process for the Rathmichael Local Area Plan will be undertaken in Q1 2025. To support effective and meaningful public participation at the Pre-Draft stage, the Local Authority will hold public information sessions during the consultation period. Suggestions or observations will be invited from anyone with an interest in the future development of the Rathmichael area.

Further details will be provided in due course regarding the commencement of the pre-draft public consultation process.
