Opening of the New Clonskeagh Road Pedestrian and Cycle Improvement scheme
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, in partnership with the National Transport Authority, is proud to announce the completion of the new Active Travel scheme along Clonskeagh Road from UCD to the proposed Dodder Greenway at Clonskeagh Bridge.
Speaking at the launch, Councillor Eva Elizabeth Dowling, Leas Chathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:
“I welcome this wonderful scheme. This scheme has facilitated improved and safer access to UCD along one of the busiest cycle routes in Dublin. I hope that facilities such as these continue to encourage people of all ages, genders and abilities to consider sustainable transport modes.”
Earlier this week, Eamon Ryan, Minister for Transport, and Councillor Eva Dowling, Leas Chathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council officially launched the new Pedestrian and Cycle Improvement scheme demonstrating our ongoing commitment to enhance active travel infrastructure, providing safer and more accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.
Minster for Transport, Eamon Ryan added:
“This scheme is a great example of safe and segregated active travel which will make it easier for everyone, young and old to walk, wheel and cycle up and down Clonskeagh Road. It is another important link in the development of a cycle network throughout Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Looking to the future this scheme also connects onto the Dodder Greenway, which will link Dublin Bay with the Dublin Mountains, and which is being made possible because of three local authorities working together, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council, and Dublin City Council.”
The scheme features enhanced facilities for cyclists on both sides of Clonskeagh Road, with 550 metres of 2.0m wide cycle tracks along most of the route. Additionally, cyclists will benefit from enhanced transitions through junctions, an island bus stop, upgraded pedestrian crossings, and road surface renewals. The public realm has also been improved with underground ESB wires, upgraded lighting, and new footpaths. The scheme also includes the planting of 16 new trees and the reconfiguration of the junction of Clonskeagh Road and Beech Hill Road.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council commented:
“This scheme continues to build on works completed in recent years along the corridor connecting Kilgobbin all the way into Dublin City. These schemes included the Sandyford Cycle Route (Kilgobbin / Drummartin Link Road), Sea to Mountains Active School Travel Route and Goatstown Road cycle protection scheme. It also contributes to this 5km corridor of high-quality pedestrian and cycle facilities that encourage modal shift and provide sustainable travel options for all.”
Ollie Raftery, Head of Civils, Actavo Ireland, said:
“Actavo Civils is pleased to have been selected for the completion of the Clonskeagh Road Pedestrian & Cycle Improvement Scheme Project by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Our team is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions that positively impact our community and contribute to the enhancement of urban spaces. We are eager to contribute to future projects for the Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network Plan."
