Exhibition of Burmese Marionettes
Burma (Myanmar) has a centuries-old tradition of puppets. They
were much used for court entertainment until the British occupation
in the later nineteenth century, when the older repertoire and
characters (mythological, animals and humans) were gradually
replaced by new stories and figures. This exhibition has a combination
of modern figures and ones associated with the older repertoire. With
their highly-coloured and decorated costumes they give a picture of one of
the more significant forms of Asian puppetry.
