Grass Pitch Refurbishments at Moreen Park & Páirc Uí Bhriain Enhance Sporting Facilities in Sandyford
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Grass Pitch Refurbishment Projects at Moreen Park and Páirc Uí Bhriain, both located in Sandyford. These projects are part of an ongoing programme of upgrade and improvement works to existing grass pitches in the County, aimed at providing high-quality sports facilities that are well maintained, sufficient in number, and accessible to as many local people as possible.
At the launch, Councillor Jim O'Leary, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:
“I would like to acknowledge the positive co-operation and contributions made by the local clubs - St. Mary’s and Naomh Olaf, local business and residents, without whom, this project would not be possible. I hope that this development will lead to further sporting accomplishments and better health and fitness for all who use them."
The refurbishment works at Moreen Park and Pairc Ui Bhriain involved extensive reconstruction, earthworks, drainage improvements, sand dressing, and a minimum 12-month establishment period. DLR are projecting a 100% increase in usage compared to current stock of grass pitches, with a reduced likelihood of pitches being called off during wet periods.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:
“The Grass Pitch Refurbishment Projects align with the Council's sporting objectives, policies, and strategies, and form part of a wider programme of improvements to deliver on our corporate goals. The success of these projects will pave the way for further upgrades to grass pitches in the County, with six more locations earmarked for refurbishment next year including at Deerpark, Stonemasons Way, Stonebridge and Clonkeen Park.”
With the highest participation rate in sport per capita in the Country, DLR recognise the importance of providing top-notch facilities for local clubs and residents to ensure our population can remain active. The refurbishment works at Moreen Park and Pairc Ui Bhriain will allow for more intensive use of the pitches, promoting active recreation and participation throughout the County. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has more than 90 grass pitches in the County and all of these have been assessed to establish their overall condition, and determine the works required.
We would like to thank the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for the Sport Capital grant funding to deliver these enhanced facilities.
