Join Us for a Special Screening of 'The Final Chapter' at dlr LexIcon
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will present a free screening of the award-winning short documentary, The Final Chapter, in the dlr Lexicon Library on Monday 25 November at 6pm.
The film is about the last days of the unique bookshop on Georges Street, Dún Laoghaire, run by comedian Kevin Gildea. The eclectic bookshop opened during the pandemic and closed for good in early 2023. The film was directed by Terence White, and features Kevin’s musings on the philosophy behind the shop, as well as the reactions of his customers to the bookshop’s closing.
Aidan Blighe, Director of Services, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council highlighted:
“Kevin Gildea’s Brilliant Bookshop didn’t just act as a magnet for booklovers willing to dive into the chaos to search for hidden treasures, it also became an integral part of the George’s Street community, and epitomised the true meaning of local business during its lifetime in Dún Laoghaire. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase Terence’s beautiful telling of the story of Kevin’s very special bookshop”.
Funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the documentary has been screened in numerous festivals in Ireland and abroad, including the Irish Film Festa in Rome and Irish Film Berlin. It also won the Best Documentary award at this year’s Underground Film Festival in Dún Laoghaire. RTÉ have acquired the short film, and it will be screened as part their Shortscreen programme in early December.
Filmmaker Terence White commented:
“I’m delighted that our documentary will have a free public screening in Dún Laoghaire, where the film was made. We’re very grateful to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for providing funding for the film and for hosting this screening. We look forward to talking to people about how and why the film was made on the night.”
There will be a Q&A with Terence White and Kevin Gildea after the screening, and light refreshments will be served.
