In September 2018 Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Arts Office and the Grainstore, dlr’s youth arts facility, invited young people to help choose a new artwork for the County Arts Collection with the aim of bringing their ideas and thinking to the choice of a new work of art to be shared with the public.
The project took place between October and December 2018. Seven young people from across DLR County took part and explored the work of an exciting range of professional artists based in Dublin, and from these works have selected 2 pieces to add to the county collection. The project was co-ordinated by curator Cleo Fagan of Superprojects and launched with talks from experienced independent curator Aisling Prior and collections expert Claire Walshe. Over six weeks Cleo led the group through different types of art exhibitions, toured galleries and went behind the scenes to visit professional artists’ studios. Discussions focused on personal taste and public audiences and the practicalities of choosing work for a permanent collection.
The two selected artists were Mary Fitzgerald and Christopher Mahon.
This project has been funded by Creative Ireland.
