Archaeology
The Draft Development Plan includes all recorded monuments and places within the County. Some of these monuments are also defined as Protected Structures (as they are structures and of special interest). These items are therefore protected under both the National Monuments Act and the Planning Act.
Location and protection of archaeological monuments
The Record of Monuments and Places (RMP), includes the results of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, and is a statutory list of all recorded archaeological monuments known to the National Monuments Service. These sites all receive statutory protection under the National Monuments Act 1994 and amendments. The record is a dynamic one and is updated to take account of on-going research and new archaeological discoveries.
Dublin Mountains Community Archaeologist Project 2021-2022
The Dublin Mountains are a popular destination for many who want to escape from the busy urban life that has now reached their foothills. Whether hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching or just taking a stroll through the woods, the uplands are busier than they have ever been. The Dublin Mountain Community Archaeology Project aims to increase awareness among those who visit, live in and work in the mountains of the region’s rich archaeological heritage.
Awareness of the archaeological heritage and increased understanding of the monuments and the stories they have to tell add significantly to the appreciation of a place for many people. It is also vital to the protection of these vulnerable sites, which we all want to see preserved for the appreciation of future generations.
This phase of the project will produce resources about the stories of the Dublin Mountains and those who have lived there over the millennia. This includes the different types of monuments and artefacts found there, how to identify them and how we should treat them.
These resources include:
- an online webinar which was broadcast live on Feb 2nd 2022, on ‘The Story of the Dublin Mountains’,
- an upcoming series of short videos on the archaeology of the Dublin Mountains,
- a new resource booklet about the archaeology of the Dublin Mountains that includes information on protecting monuments, and
- a series of focused training workshops aimed at those actively engaged in working in the mountain landscape.

This project is being managed by Abarta Heritage on behalf of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council and the Dublin Mountains Partnership with funding from the Heritage Council, and in consultation with key stakeholders such as the National Monuments Service, the OPW, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Coillte and others.
