Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Hosts 32nd Annual Tidy Districts Awards Ceremony
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council proudly held their 32nd Annual Tidy Districts Awards ceremony last night at County Hall, Dún Laoghaire. This esteemed competition continues to recognise and reward the dedicated efforts of Resident Associations, Tidy Town, Tidy District, and Estate Management groups in enhancing the local environment. Nature initiatives continue to lead local improvements, with many groups adopting perennial, native, pollinator-friendly planting, along with a significant effort to reduce waste and single-use plastics. Originally focused on anti-litter and anti-graffiti initiatives, the competition has evolved to include biodiversity, climate action, sustainability, circular economy and community engagement.
Speaking at the awards, An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Councillor Jim O’Leary said:
“I am delighted to congratulate all the winners of the Tidy Districts Awards 2024, whose dedication and hard work in enhancing our local environment are truly commendable. The efforts of Resident Associations, Tidy Town, Tidy District, and Estate Management groups in beautifying our communities and fostering a strong sense of community spirit is truly commendable and their commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, circular economy and climate action, sets a remarkable example for all and makes Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant place to live. The Tidy Districts awards continue to be a vital and successful aspect of the teamwork that exists between dlr and the communities it serves. I extend my congratulations to all groups who participated in Tidy Districts 2024 and encourage more groups to join next year."
This year, thirty-three Residents’ Associations, Estate Management Groups, and Tidy Towns Groups who entered the competition were awarded prizes.
Dalkey Tidy Towns were the overall winner of Tidy Districts 2024. This enthusiastic team of volunteers was recognised for their outstanding work in the community. Their hard work and effort are visible throughout the town, with judges noting the area was maintained to an exceptionally high standard. From community clean ups to planting, supporting biodiversity through pollinator projects, and working with local schools and communities, Dalkey Tidy Towns clearly take great pride in making a difference to the environment.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, added:
"The Tidy Districts environmental awareness programme provides us with a wonderful opportunity to recognise and reward the voluntary efforts of Resident Associations, Tidy Town, Tidy District, and Estate Management groups in enhancing their local environment. This year, we are thrilled to have 33 entrants, including two new groups, participating in the event. DLR continues to support our communities by offering clean-up materials through our Community Clean Up Scheme, workshops, and funding, including the newly launched Environment and Climate Action Grant 2025, which is open until 25th October 2024. The tireless efforts of our volunteers are truly commendable. They work diligently to improve their environment and help their communities flourish, demonstrating local leadership and dedication."
