The Harbour Section have recently undertaken some key projects that have been funded by the Brexit Adjustment Reserve Local Authority Marine Infrastructure (BALAMI) Scheme 2022 – 2023. The BALAMI Scheme was a special one-off emergency instrument, designed to support economic sectors, businesses, and local communities and to support job creation and protection by distributing Brexit Adjustment Reserve funds to enhance, upgrade, modernise and develop Irelands publicly owned coastal and marine infrastructure to facilitate diversification of economic opportunities. The Department of Agriculture, Food and The Marine administered the Scheme.

Berth 2 & 3 Fender Replacement Project
A new ship fendering system has been installed at Dún Laoghaire Harbour Carlilse Pier. The fenders protect the pier by absorbing the energy from a berthing vessel. The previous fenders had fallen into a state of disrepair and needed replacing. Nine new fenders on Berth 2 and eight new fenders on Berth 3 were installed on tubular piles and have increased the capacity and flexibility of the quay for berthing a range of vessels which moor at the Harbour.
East Pier Revetment Repair
The outer revetment of the East Pier is a sloped concrete projection to the outside of the East Pier. Sections of the revetment had become damaged with voids and undermining becoming evident following detailed surveys. The revetment had become damaged over the years due to storms and general wear and tear. Much of the damage to the revetment was either in the intertidal zone (between high and low tide) or below the water. Repairs were carried out from the sea by using landing craft to transport materials and plant/equipment to site.
Carlisle Pier Deck Repair and Lighting
The deck of the Carlisle Pier had sections of an old disused railway line that was in need of resurfacing so as to improve the surface for shipping and sailing events. A lighting upgrade was also required.
Ice Plant Demolition
A disused Ice Plant was in-situ at the end of Traders Wharf, Dún Laoghaire Harbour. The Ice Plant was constructed in circa 1970’s when Dún Laoghaire had a trawling fleet. Trawling in Dublin Bay was subsequently prohibited resulting in the Ice Plant building becoming disused. The Ice Plant was demolished in 2022 so that the area could be used for bait and shellfish storage for the current fishing fleet.
