Blackrock Park's Historic Kiosk to be restored - Preserving the Past for the Future

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has announced plans to renovate the historic Kiosk located in Blackrock Park. The project aims to transform the Kiosk into a tearoom, serving as a hub for the park with additional seating and accessibility, providing a pleasant place to sit and enjoy views over the park and Dublin Bay.

Councillor Denis O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council highlighted: 

"The restoration of the kiosk is part of the broader Blackrock Park Masterplan with the current phase works focusing on further enhancing park features and access points. The renovation of the kiosk is a key component of this phase, ensuring the continued preservation and enhancement of this historic structure."

The kiosk, with its unique Tudor-style timber frame and verandah wrapping around the entire footprint, is a well-recognised and iconic building synonymous with Blackrock Park. The renovation of this historic structure will not only improve park facilities and access for all visitors, but also enhance the park's historic character.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

"We are thrilled to announce the renovation of the historic kiosk at Blackrock Park. This project will have several benefits to the park and the wider Blackrock locality, providing a pleasant place to relax and enjoy the stunning views over Dublin Bay."

The proposed renovation work, informed by a conservation report and onsite investigative works, will aim to preserve as much of the original fabric as possible. The roof will be reinstated with clay tiles, the timber structure repaired and replaced as necessary, and new glass introduced to all restored windows for weather tightness. The veranda will be restored with new benches and a tiled natural stone surface, while internally, the space will be restored with a perimeter bench and serving counter. 

The renovation of the historic kiosk at Blackrock Park is a significant project that will restore this iconic structure to its former glory, providing a beautiful and functional space for visitors to enjoy for years to come. Works will start on Monday 10 June 2024 and are due to be completed by Spring 2025.
