Launch of dlr Play Policy and Kilcross Play Space Opens
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is proud to announce the official launch of the dlr Play Policy and the opening of the Kilcross Play Space project. This reflects our commitment to providing inclusive, safe, and adventurous play spaces for people of all ages to enjoy freely and safely. The Kilcross Play Space project, located next to Fitzsimons Wood, a proposed Natural Heritage site, was designed in collaboration with the local community.
Councillor Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County emphasised the importance of community consultation for the success of the Kilcross Play Space project. “There was extensive stakeholder mapping and engagement activities that took place throughout the planning process, ensuring that the play space reflects the vision of the local community”.
The dlr Play Policy focuses on three strategic priorities: delivering play spaces and places, enjoying play and recreation, and working collaboratively with the community and local schools. Through these strategies, we aim to create welcoming, safe, and inclusive play spaces that cater to individuals of all ages and abilities. The Kilcross Play Space project serves as a prime example of the implementation of these strategies, with a design that is led by children's input and feedback. This approach ensures that the play space is both engaging and suitable for all individuals.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said: “Our vision is that play and recreation will be an inclusive, life-enhancing daily experience for everybody in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County. We want to ensure that every person can access play and recreation opportunities freely and safely, offering variety, adventure, and challenge in a wide range of universally accessible settings."
In addition to the launch of the dlr Play Policy and Kilcross Play Space, several current playgrounds in the area are being restored and enhanced. This includes openings at Belarmine and Deer Park next week, construction beginning at Marley Woodland Park (for children up to 12 years old), and at Finsbury Park in Dundrum. Restoration projects for Hyde Park, Soldiers & Sailors, and Springhill Park are also set to commence soon.
Looking ahead, the consultation will soon begin for play spaces in Deansgrange/Clonkeen and Ludford Park, with completion dates targeted for the 2025. Additionally, four refurbishment projects are planned for delivery in 2025, further demonstrating our commitment to improving play and recreation opportunities for all.
