dlr & SSE Airticity: Bringing Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings to Homes
- Council homes retrofitting pilot partnership already underway
- 53 homes with BER ratings as low as G gaining a B2 – A2 BER standard
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and SSE Airtricity are partnering to transform communities and homes as part of a specialised retrofit rollout. 53 homes have been upgraded to a deep retrofit standard by SSE Airtricity with the support of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
This project has ensured residents of Ballyogan and Stillorgan initially and other areas across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown will have the highest standards of energy efficiency in their homes aswell as benefitting from improved living standards. This is a collaborative effort between SSE Airtricity and the Council to implement energy efficiency projects.
These works were carried out as part of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Energy Efficiency Retrofit Programme which aims to retrofit local authority housing stock to a B2/Cost Optimal BER.
The homes involved have been upgraded from the lowest possible BER rating of G and F to all units gaining a B2 – A2 BER standard. The upgrade measures included new windows and doors, solar panels & power divert, external insulation, LED lights, attic insulation and heating control upgrades. The project is making significant contribution to a low carbon transition, saving 600MWH per year; equivalent to the annual total electricity consumption of 143 houses*, and providing 143.1kw of roof top 100% renewable energy throughout the local area. The retrofit works have translated into significant savings for Council tenants and a vastly improved living experience in their home.
Will O’Shaughnessy, Head of Business Development and Major Projects with SSE Airtricity said:
We are delighted to be working alongside Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in this fantastic project that will see many homes retrofitted to the highest standards of energy efficiency. These upgrades will provide improved living standards for many residents of Ballyogan and Stillorgan and provide warmth and comfort as well as helping to improve their wellbeing. We continue to work with our partners here in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and across Ireland providing efficient and cost-effective green energy solutions; and supporting them on the efforts that will help us achieve net zero carbon emissions.
Cllr. Lettie McCarthy, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:
Retrofitting homes to the highest energy efficiency standards will help to make a significant contribution to a low carbon transition while also providing warmth and comfort to our tenants in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown who need it the most. We are all aware of the challenges and dangers that Climate Change currently poses so it is imperative that we look to all possible solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve the way we live and work. I would like to thank SSE Airtricity for working with us on this project.
