Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council have today published updated plans for Phase 1 of the development of Shanganagh Park. These latest plans take into consideration feedback received from the community during a series of consultation events in January of this year.

An independent report on the recent consultation activity, from community engagement consultants Connect the Dots found that Shanganagh Park plays many important but often conflicting roles for the local community.

The main revision to Phase 1 plans is a reduction in the number of multi-use grass pitches in the proposed new active recreation zones to one, preserving a large portion of the central meadow space for more passive recreation and biodiversity protection. The Council also intends to revise the Shanganagh Park Masterplan to incorporate future upgrades to existing pitches at the front of the park, including the installation of floodlights.

The decision to revise the Phase 1 plans and the Masterplan has been made in an effort to balance space for both active (e.g. team sports, high intensity exercise) and passive (e.g. walking, enjoyment of natural spaces) uses, so that all kinds of visitors can continue to use and enjoy the park.

The Part 8 statutory consultation period will be open from today, 6th April to 22nd May 2023.

Councillor Mary Hanafin, An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

These latest plans for Shanganagh Park give direct consideration to the views that were shared during the recent consultation. I would encourage the local community to continue to engage with dlr by making a submission during this latest consultation period, to ensure that Parks & Landscapes staff and local councillors can again consider all views in the final decision-making process.”

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown has the highest sports participation rates in the country and it is a priority for dlr to provide much needed sports facilities across the county. We also value the importance of preserving green spaces for the wellbeing of both people and nature. We believe these latest plans for Shanganagh Park show that both goals can be achieved side by side.”

Eoin O’Brien, Senior Executive Parks Superintendent for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said:

We would again like to sincerely thank the Shanganagh Park community for taking part in our consultation events earlier this year, for sharing their views with us and for allowing us to explain what we hope to achieve with the proposed development in the park. Shanganagh Park is a place of great value and enjoyment for many types of visitors, and we are eager to continue to provide high quality green spaces and facilities that serve all park users into the future. We hope the community agrees that these latest plans will allow us to do this.”
