The winners for the Stories From Isolation competition have been announced at a live online ceremony this afternoon, attended by An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Una Power. Over 100 submissions were entered into the competition and 22 films were shortlisted to go forward to a final adjudication. Of the 22 finalists, the following 5 films were selected for awards:

  • 1st Place: ‘His Car’ by Mark Lynch (Film Year 1)
  • 2nd Place: ‘Immune’ by Aisling Keogh (Film Year 1)
  • 3rd Place: ‘Close Proximity’ by Tori Keegan (New Media Studies Year 2)
  • 4th Place: ‘Losing my Marbles’ by Killian O’Boyle (New Media Studies Year 1)
  • Special Mention Award: ‘Hope’ by Daniel Sedgwick (Film Year 1)

The Stories From Isolation is an internal competitive process for IADT students studying the Film & New Media undergrad programmes, providing the students an opportunity to capture their experiences of COVID-19 and lockdown over the past 14 months, from their point of view. The idea was to allow the students to present a unique personal response to these unprecedented times, as they perceived them.

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Una Power commented after the final ceremony:

I would like to congratulate all the winners and commend all those who partook in this competition for the brilliant pieces they all produced. This is a wonderful competition and gave us an amazing insight into the challenges faced by people, particularly young people, during this pandemic. It was an honour and a pleasure to be part of this competition and I look forward to seeing further collaboration between dlr and IADT in the future.

The IADT campus is based in Kill O’ The Grange, in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area. Its Department of Film & Media has a long-standing reputation as Ireland’s centre of excellence for education and training in film, animation, broadcasting and the screen arts. The department is home to the National Film School (NFS). In recent years dlr and the NFS have developed closer links and engaged in collaborative processes, including the annual dlr First Frames emerging film makers funding scheme, Young Women in Film & TV gender parity initiative, as well as film, documentary and animation initiatives linked to Cruinniú na nÓg and the Creative Ireland programme. IADT and dlr also partnered on the intergenerational dlr Age Friendly Alliance Book Project. The Stories From Isolation competition was another of these collaborations, with dlr sponsoring the opportunity for students to utilise their skillsets that have been broadened by their studies.

The shortlisted films will be screened throughout May on all dlr media channels.
