To mark World Ocean Day, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has launched an anti-dog fouling campaign featuring the unveiling of 70 Big Belly Bins with posters from local primary school artists. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the issue of dog fouling on streets and beaches, which is a growing concern affecting our seas and bathing water quality.

The winning posters in the annual dlr Anti-Dog Fouling Poster Competition were showcased on the Belly Bins, highlighting the creativity and talent of young environmental artists. Over 100 entries were received this year, impressing the judges with their quality and message.

Cllr. Denis O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, presented certificates and prizes to the winners in a ceremony held in County Hall to coincide with World Ocean Day on 8th June 2024 and said:

“The dlr Anti-Dog Fouling Poster Competition 2024 was a huge success with over 100 entrants from primary school pupils across the county. The quality of artwork in the different age groups was extremely high and the messages in posters show our young citizens want a clean environment. I look forward to seeing the winning posters shown on our Big Belly litter bins.”

Mr. Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, added

The dlr Anti-Dog Fouling Poster Competition 2024 highlights the unpleasant issue of dog fouling in our public spaces. The competition provides young artistic students in our county a platform to make their voice heard on the matter and allows the Council to display their work on our Big Belly bins. I encourage people to take a moment to view the posters and take our Green Dog Walker pledge via the QR code on the bins.”

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are encouraging all dog owners to be responsible by scanning the Belly Bin QR codes and taking the Green Dog Walker pledge to clean up after their dogs.
