Marine and Underwater Environments at Centre of Art Exhibition at dlr LexIcon
Artist Martina O’Brien considers the ocean as a source of materials and inspiration in this new body of artworks
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to present an exhibition of new artworks by Martina O’Brien, titled 'brittle record', which has just opened in the Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire. The work in the exhibition was developed through engagement with marine geochemistry, marine biology and marine ecology experts, and draws on Martina O’Brien’s time spent on marine expedition residencies in Oslofjord, Norway and the Arctic Ocean. Bringing together new video installations, printmaking, animation and archival material, Martina considers the ocean as a vast, shifting archive of materials in this absorbing exhibition.
Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Councillor Jim O’Leary said:
"Martina O’Brien’s exhibition is a fascinating look at the marine, coastal and underwater environments in Dún Laoghaire and the Irish Sea. Her work responds to marine life forms and buried underwater histories in a unique and interesting way."
Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Frank Curran added:
"The Council was delighted to award this exhibition to Martina O’Brien. We are very grateful to the Arts Council for supporting this exhibition and encourage everyone to visit it at dlr LexIcon."
brittle record is the result of a dlr Visual Art Commission, which was awarded to Martina O’Brien. It is funded by the Arts Council and supported by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
brittle record opens at the Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire on Friday 14 February and runs until 2 April (closed 15 - 17 March inclusive). Admission is free of charge. Alongside the exhibition, dlr Arts Office will run a programme of accompanying talks, workshops and events.
