Works have officially commenced on the Woodland Adventure Playground, a unique and inclusive play space nestled within the mature woodland setting of Fernhill. This exciting new play space was inspired by local primary school children during Creative Ireland’s Cruinniú na nÓg, where two imaginative concepts emerged — the ribbon and the hideaway — reflecting a deep desire to connect with the forest and play among the trees.

An Cathaoirleach Cllr Jim Gildea, Chief Executive Frank Curran, elected members, and our Parks staff were on site to mark the beginning of this project.

Inspired by the natural surroundings, the design features:

  • A ribbon of agility-play items winding through the trees
  • A soaring 9m tall hideaway tower reaching into the canopy
  • A woodland quarry theme that reflects the heritage of the area.

Children and young people will enjoy a huge variety of play experiences — swinging, sliding, climbing, spinning, bouncing, balancing, rocking, resting, socialising, and imaginative play — all in a safe, adventurous, and child-centred environment.

This destination play space is being developed as part of our vision for Fernhill as a Regional Park, and we look forward to welcoming the public when it opens early next year!

In addition to the main play space upgrade, we’re also carrying out some ancillary improvements in the area — including repairing existing stone walls, planting and landscaping, installing new park railings. These works are separate from the main play space contract and are currently ongoing, with no confirmed completion date at this time.

Further information on the project can be found here.
