SEAI Deep Retrofit Pilot Programme
significant upgrade of a building toward nearly zero energy requirements where it is practically feasible and achievable.
minimum BER A3 and a minimum Building Energy Rating (BER) uplift of 150 kWh/m2/yr.
SEAI Awards 2020
SSE Airtricity won the Energy in Buildings category at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) 2020 Awards for their deep retrofit refurbishment works of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Moyola Court, Churchtown. The houses were built in the 1970’s and before their upgrade were in poor condition. Supported under the SEAI Deep Retrofit programme, the installation of innovative heating technologies, advanced insulation, heat pumps, renewable generation and battery storage resulted in these inefficient units becoming some of the most efficient and comfortable in the country. The houses were upgraded using Passive House retrofit principles and the BER ratings improved from G to A3 which had a hugely positive impact on the residents.
The Site was upgraded in two phases:
Phase 1: Block 1 comprising 8 houses
Phase 2: Block 2 comprising 4 houses and siteworks
Before:
Built during the early 1970’s
Ground Floor poured concrete slab with no insulation
First Floor Precast hollow core slab
Roof Precast slabs with mineral wool insulation
External Walls Uninsulated concrete block cavity walls with brick facing to front elevation
Individual gas boilers
12 No.1970’s terraced houses all with poor BER ratings from E to G
After:
Energy retrofit measures brought the houses to A2 and A3
External wall insulation
New triple glazed windows and doors
Roof insulation
Block 1 - Mechanical heat recovery ventilation with heat pump
Block 2 - Photovoltaic solar panels, battery with smart inverter, electric heat panels and hot water cylinder with heat recovery
