Yesterday marked the exciting launch of the dlr Balance Bike Programme, with an additional 20 balance bikes and helmets provided to children at Scoil Cholmcille Junior National School in Ballybrack. This initiative is part of the widely popular dlr Sports Partnership Balance Bike Programme, which aims to promote cycling among young children in local Primary Schools.

Councillor Denis O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach said:

"It is great to see such a simple, yet effective programme being provided for free to the young people in our primary schools. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council prides itself on supporting people of all ages and abilities to consider sustainable transport modes, and it is important that the younger generation learn the basics of cycling at a young age to allow them to carry this skill with them throughout their lives."

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council commented:

“This programme allows schools to borrow balance bikes/helmets for 4 weeks along with instructional videos to support teachers in upskilling their students in the basics of cycling and cycle skills. We now have a large fleet of bikes and helmets that we lend to schools free of charge. The programme has been very well received and is having a very positive impact on students.”

This programme is in partnership with dlr Sports Partnership, Active Cities Dublin, and Active Travel.

Bike Week is taking place from Saturday, May 11th to Sunday, May 19th across dlr. Further details and the full listings of events taking place as part of Bike Week can be found on the dlr website here, or on the TFI website here.
