Launch of Gateway to Independence

Gateway to Independence, an outdoor photographic exhibition that explores the role of Dún Laoghaire and the Anglo-Irish Treaty, was launched this morning by An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Lettie McCarthy in Moran Park.
Dún Laoghaire, the ‘Gateway of Ireland’, was the port through which the Treaty delegates passed on their way to and from negotiations in London from October to December 1921. 

Following the signing of the Treaty on 6 December 1921, Arthur Griffith and his team arrived at Carlisle Pier in Dún Laoghaire. The exhausted delegates were greeted by a large number of local IRA who formed a guard of honour for the signatories as they disembarked. Griffith raised his hat to the cheering crowd waiting at the harbour and Michael Collins, who followed him off the boat, gave a military salute.
