Dreaming of a Green Christmas? 12 Tips for an Eco-Friendly Festive Season
Christmas is traditionally a time of celebration, joy and goodwill to all, however the season can also lead to increased consumption and waste which impacts on our environment. This year, why not make your festivities more sustainable? Here are 12 tips to help you celebrate an eco-friendlier Green Christmas.
1. Buy Less Stuff
The most sustainable way to approach Christmas is to simply buy less stuff. One way is by gifting experiences such as tickets for the spa, cinema, theatre, gigs, museums and other events. Classes can be bought on everything from kayaking, beekeeping, painting and growing vegetables to local walking tours, which create only memories.
2. Buy Local, Sustainable Gifts
If you do buy gifts, buy local, sustainable gifts. This considered approach to spending helps keep money in the local economy whilst supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. It also cuts down on climate emissions by reducing the importation of mass-produced goods from far away.
3. Choose a Real Christmas Tree
Opt for a real Christmas tree grown, sold or rented locally. If you buy a real tree in a pot, make sure to look after it well during the festivities and then replant or let it grow outdoors throughout the year. If you go for a regular cut tree, be sure to recycle it in early January at one of DLR’s many Christmas Tree recycling locations.
4. Switch to LED Lights
Use LED lights on your Christmas tree. They use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, last much longer, and look just as good! Also, turn off lights and decorations when not in use and consider using a timer - it's safer and won’t cost the earth.
5. Make Your Own Decorations
Get creative by making your own decorations using natural materials like pinecones, dried oranges, holly and ivy garlands, and cinnamon sticks. Use spare materials around the house and turn old paper into paperchains. This not only reduces plastic waste but also adds a personal touch to your décor whilst saving you money!
6. Wrap Gifts Sustainably
Use reusable wrapping options like fabric wraps, old maps, or newspapers. You can also decorate plain brown paper with stamps, drawings or potato/sponge prints for a unique touch.
7. Cut Your Food Waste
Cut food waste by planning your meals ahead to avoid overbuying. Use leftovers creatively and instead of clingfilm, use Tupperware and wax cloth covers to keep leftovers nice and fresh! Compost any food scraps.
8. Buy Local, Organic and Plant-based
Support local farmers and reduce your carbon footprint by buying organic and locally sourced food for your Christmas feast. Eating more plant-based meals is also good for you and the planet and also helps ensures fresher and healthier meals.
9. Use Reusable Tableware
Avoid disposable plates, cups, and cutlery. Instead, use reusable tableware for your holiday meals. If you must use disposables, choose compostable options.
10. Send E-Cards
Instead of traditional paper cards, send e-cards to your friends and family. This saves paper and reduces the carbon footprint associated with mailing cards.
11. Travel Sustainably
If you’re traveling for the holidays, consider using public transportation, carpooling, or even biking if possible. This reduces your carbon emissions and can be a fun way to travel.
12. Recycle Properly
Make sure to recycle packaging, wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, and other recyclable materials. Check your local recycling guidelines to ensure you’re doing it correctly.
By incorporating these tips into your holiday celebrations, you can enjoy a festive and joyful Christmas while also caring for our planet. Let’s make this season not only merry and bright but also green and sustainable!
