Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, and South Dublin County Council in partnership with CONNECT Research Ireland Centre for Future Networks and Communications, and Smart Dublin have launched a new campaign ‘Telecoms for Everyone’ designed to empower residents with clear, factual information about the benefits and safety of telecoms infrastructure that supports digital connectivity in their local areas.

As part of Dublin’s drive to foster a more connected, innovative city, the campaign includes a fact-based series of videos that shows how telecoms infrastructure supports economic growth, community wellbeing, and Dublin’s evolution in the digital age.

All four local authorities are committed to collaboration, bringing together industry, academia, and key research centres like the CONNECT Centre to support the responsible rollout of future connectivity initiatives. As Dublin continues to evolve as a smart city, world class digital infrastructure is essential for community wellbeing and economic resilience.

Just like the arrival of electricity transformed our city in the early 1900’s, the four Dublin local authorities play a big part in helping our city’s telecoms and broadband networks to drive Dublin forward in the 21st century. Every day, we all use the internet to work, play, and manage so many areas of our daily lives. The connectivity that allows us to do that has steadily improved over the years in two ways:

  • Mobile: We have now arrived at the fifth generation of mobile telecoms, known as 5G. And from mobile towers and masts to street-works across the city, this technology makes it possible for us to use our mobiles devices to make calls, go online and do so much more.
  • Fixed line: Land line telephones have been part of city life for over half a century. And the arrival of fibre-to-the-home broadband is focused on providing every home in Dublin with access to fast fibre broadband.

In an era of rapid technological advances, 5G connectivity enables innovations like the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data to become integral to daily life. From optimising transport to enhancing healthcare and public safety, these advancements are all made possible through fast, reliable connectivity provided by 5G. This new technology provides numerous benefits:

  • Faster Speeds: With lower latency and higher throughput, users can experience quicker data transmission.
  • Improved Efficiency and Reliability: Enhanced network management ensures dependable connectivity across various applications.
  • Increased Capacity: 5G supports a massive increase in the number of connections between devices and the internet, facilitating seamless communication.

The Dublin Local Authorities don’t operate telecoms equipment, but they do provide access to our streetscapes and built environment where appropriate, to help drive connectivity across Dublin. Each local authority has a dedicated point of contact to support telecoms and works hard to make sure that all communities have great connectivity that is deployed sensitively. The landline, fibre, 4G, and 5G networks are operated by commercial operators in the telecoms industry who work together with local authorities to ensure everyone has the highest quality connectivity solutions available.
