Permanent Commissions

We have commissioned a number of large permanent artworks over the last number of years.

Samuel Beckett Civic Campus, Eileen MacDonagh, 2016

This sculpture was commissioned as part of the new Civic Campus and the artist was asked to take inspiration from the life and/or work of Beckett.  Eileen MacDonagh, who was awarded the commission, created a large-scale sculpture from granite – a material which has been so important in shaping the landscape of the area.  Beckett was born in the area, very close to the site of the Civic Campus, and it influenced his work to a large degree.

dlr LexIcon, Katharine Lamb, 2014

This is a 5.5 metre high hand-crafted glass art window which was especially made for the new dlr LexIcon. Katharine was inspired by maps of dlr county, its geography, flora and fauna. She used a whole range of colours to capture a sense of the landscape, from the mountains down to the sea. The lowest point of the work is the darkest and the glass becomes lighter as it moves up the piece, revealing the wall behind it.

‘The Gift’ by Sandra Bell, 2006

The Gift by Sandra Bell*is a life-sized figure made in cast bronze, made for Bentley Villas, a residential homeless unit in Dún Laoghaire. Sandra was inspired by Maggie Maloney, the owner of the original site where the building stands.  Maggie was a fishmonger all her life and left her house to the County Council.
